SmartstatXL is an add-in for Excel designed to simplify the process of experimental layout planning. With this tool, you can easily design various types of trials or runs and set up layouts for different types of experimental designs. This includes Single, Factorial, Split-Plot, Split-Split Plot, and Strip Plot designs. In addition, SmartstatXL offers a range of basic design options, including CRD (Completely Randomized Design), RBD (Randomized Block Design), and LSD (Latin Square Design).

Here are the steps you need to follow to create an Experimental Layout with SmartstatXL:

  1. Activate the Excel worksheet (Sheet).
  2. Click on the Layout Experiment Menu.
  3. The following dialog box will appear:
  4. Select the Experimental Design Model, Treatment Design, and Levels for each Factor. Be sure to specify the model of the experimental design to be used and detail the treatment design to be applied. Additionally, specify the levels or tiers of each factor involved in the experiment.
  5. For illustration, we will create an Experimental Layout for a Split Plot using the basic RBD (Randomized Block Design).
The Treatment Design will be set as follows:
    Main Plot: Pesticide (4 levels)
    Sub Plot: Fertilizer (3 levels)
    Blocks: 4
  6. Proceed as follows:
  7. Here is the display of the Experimental Layout for the RBD Split-Plot:
  8. If you choose LSD as the basic design, the display will be slightly different:
  9. Here is the display of the Experimental Layout for LSD Split-Plot:

Description of the Second Image from the Output (LSD Split-Plot Experimental Layout):

Section 1: Detailed information about the experimental design, including:

  • Treatment Details:
    • Pesticide (A) - Main Plot with 4 levels: |a0|a1|a2|a3|.
    • Fertilizer (B) - Sub Plot with 3 levels: |b0|b1|b2|.
    • Number of Rows/Columns: 4.
  • Number of Factors: 2.
  • Type of Experimental Design: LSD Split-Plot.

Section 2:

Contains the "Treatment Randomization (Run/Trial)" table, which shows the treatment combinations for each trial. This table includes columns for Run/Trial number, type of Pesticide, type of Fertilizer, as well as columns and rows indicating the trial location.

Section 3:

Displays "Experimental Plot Layout: LSD Split-Plot." Here, the experimental layout is shown in matrix form with rows and columns. Each matrix cell shows a treatment combination, for example "a2b2" or "a0b0".

Section 4:

Similar to Section 3, but displays the trial numbers in each matrix cell. This aids in quick identification and reference for each trial.
